Suspicious Bags Prompt Bomb Squad Response, Evacuation at Disneyland Resort
ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA — A security alert involving two suspicious bags near the main entrance to Disneyland Resort prompted an extensive police response Monday night, temporarily disrupting guest departures and forcing the closure of portions of the resort's eastern entrance area.
Disneyland security personnel notified the Anaheim Police Department at approximately 9:50 p.m. on October 12 after discovering two unattended bags near a roundabout outside the theme park's main entrance.
According to police statements reported by the Los Angeles Times, one bag contained marbles and exposed wires, while a second was secured with duct tape and had sharp objects protruding from it. One of the bags was positioned on a dolly.
The appearance of the items raised concerns about a possible explosive device, prompting Anaheim Police to request assistance from the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad.
Guests Redirected as Security Perimeter Established
As authorities investigated the suspicious items, Disneyland personnel cleared guests from the affected Esplanade area and temporarily restricted access through the resort's eastern gateway.
Visitors attempting to leave the theme parks were redirected to alternate exits while police and bomb technicians examined the bags.
The security operation also disrupted access to the Toy Story parking-area shuttles, a major transportation connection used by Disneyland visitors.
The restrictions caused confusion among some guests attempting to depart the resort late Monday evening, with reports of visitors being unable to use their usual exit routes.
Disneyland officials confirmed that the affected area was temporarily closed as a precaution while law enforcement conducted its investigation.
Bomb Squad Determines Bags Were Harmless
After examining the suspicious items, the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad determined shortly before midnight that neither bag contained explosives.
Authorities subsequently cleared the area, allowing normal access to resume.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Although the bags were found to be harmless, Anaheim Police indicated that investigators believed they may have been deliberately arranged to appear suspicious.
Police were working to identify the person or persons responsible for leaving the items near the resort entrance.
As of the initial reports, authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or announced any arrests.
Incident Highlights Security Challenges at Major Entertainment Venues
The incident illustrates the operational challenges security teams face when suspicious objects are discovered in crowded public environments.
At large entertainment destinations such as Disneyland Resort, a potential security threat can affect multiple interconnected operations, including pedestrian access, transportation services, guest movement and coordination with emergency responders.
In this case, Disneyland security personnel identified and reported the suspicious items, prompting a coordinated response involving Anaheim Police and the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad.
The decision to temporarily restrict access and redirect visitors allowed authorities to investigate the items while limiting public access to the affected area.
The incident also demonstrates how an object that ultimately poses no explosive danger can still create substantial disruption when its appearance raises legitimate safety concerns.
The resort confirmed that the affected area reopened following the police investigation and that normal operations were expected to resume Tuesday.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for leaving the bags or indicated whether criminal charges will be pursued.
The investigation into who left the items remained open following the bomb squad's determination that the bags contained no explosives.
