DOVER, DELAWARE — A man was killed and another injured Saturday night after gunfire erupted in a shopping center parking lot amid large crowds gathered near Delaware State University following the university's homecoming events, according to the Dover Police Department.
The shooting occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. on October 10 in the parking lot of Dover Commons Shopping Center, where police officers were already deployed to manage large gatherings and respond to disturbances in the surrounding area.
According to Dover Police, officers heard gunshots and observed people fleeing the shopping center parking lot as the shooting unfolded.
Responding officers located two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus in police vehicles after officers determined that heavy pedestrian and vehicle congestion along Route 13 could delay the arrival of ambulances.
One of the victims, identified as Nasir Cox, 22, of Philadelphia, later died from his injuries.
The second victim, a 21-year-old man whose identity has not been released, remained hospitalized in stable condition at the time of the department's initial announcement.
The shooting occurred amid significant crowds gathered in the Dover area following Delaware State University's homecoming activities.
Police said more than 50 officers from multiple law enforcement agencies had been deployed to the surrounding area to manage large gatherings and respond to incidents involving fights, disorderly conduct and reports of gunfire.
